On patriotic days such as this people usually tout the reasons why they appreciate being the nationality that they are. We are lucky that we're among those who appreciate being "in this place" (sorry I couldn't resist). If you don't get that comment, you probably aren't interested in the marketing efforts of the provincial government. ;-)
I'm not going to settle in to the cliches of what makes us Canadian or why we should be proud of our heritage. I can't tell you why you appreciate this country or even why you should. We all have our own personal reasons. And they've probaby been said by people more philosophic and prolific than I. Then what's the point of this blog you ask?
There isn't one... other than to say I'm going to sit back in the sunshine and watch my granddaughter find her own reasons to love this country today as she happily dons her red and white outfit. To help her better understand why we salute the flag, stand up for the national anthem, and why neighbours turn out in droves to enjoy the day's festivities with each other by one of the most beautiful rivers in the world. Why they will so feel contented and awed as the fireworks fly in all their glory tonight... then she can go home to bed. Safe and sound. Oh Canada!
