Good Night Madie

I've already expounded on the joys of Grammiehood and the good-night rituals that come with it. But conversations with five-year-olds keep you in wonderment. Those of you who read my daughter's blog know this was Madie's first week of kindergarten, and when I babysat her on her first day with a full class of kids, I expected lots of stories. But she took more in stride than I thought... here's how the bedtime talk went as we both lay side-by-side staring up at the ceiling.

Grammie: So do you know anyone in your class?
Madie: Yes (and she names a few she says went to Kiddie Camp with her).
Grammie: And did you see more kids you know at recess?
Madie: Yes, Emma Rose Buchanan and Brady.
Grammie: Did you play with them?
Madie: No. I played by myself.
Grammie: Why?
Madie: So I could do what I wanted to do. (Who else do I know likes to be in control?)
Grammie: What did you do in school today?
Madie: We had a fire drill to be safe. And the bell rang and we had to line up and wait for the other kids by Emma Rose Buchanan's class.
Grammie: How long were you outside?
Madie: Til I was freezing! Grammie, you know what I want for Christmas, something live!
Grammie: And what would that be?
Madie: A penguin.
Grammie: Really!
Madie: I'm going to ask Grampy to move the pool at your house to my house and when it gets cold the water will freeze and I can keep the penguins (suddenly it's plural... and I can just imagine the reaction of my bird-fearing sister who lives down the street)... and I can feed them... what do penguins eat... oh yeah, fish. I can get fish when me and Daddy go fishing.
Grammie: Ah ha. (Then she starts singing, I want a hippopotamus for Christmas... I wait for this next LARGER Christmas wish... but it doesn't come... yet!)
