I'm glad I learned to read music and play the piano, though not very well mind you. I had the long fingers for it, but unless I had the music in front of me, my ear was no so inclined. Nonetheless, my grandmother Eve afforded me that opportunity when I was young. My parents got me a piano from a friend of hers and it's still in my basement, a heavy hunk of a relic, which holds great memories.
When my girls got to be of age, my parents paid for their piano lessons. Then they both got into drumming for a bit, and Angie actually took on the bagpipes for an even shorter time, but that all helped lead to great experiences in music and dance for both of them... a source of enjoyment forever.
Recently my granddaughter Madison started piano lessons. Of course we had to take on the tradition of paying for them for this is the third generation of grandparents to do so, and I think it's a great tradition. Madie says she wants to be a singer someday so I hope the musical training will help bring those notes out loud and clear.
What better family tradition than the sound of music! Play on, Madie!
