you just run up against a hot goaltender. That was my husband's explanation for why the nationally second-seeded University of Alberta Golden Bears took home the Cavendish Cup last night instead of the number-one ranked University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.
Here's the synopsis - we outshot them 42-25 and just couldn't buy that tie goal. We scored first, they retaliated. We scored second, they retaliated. It was tied most of the game but on a power play one tiptoed by UNB goaltender Mike Ouzas, not his or anyone else's fault really. Just one of those things when you are down a man. Still there was lots of time to come back and we were playing very well. But that darned hot goaltender - despite the fact that the action was mostly in their end, it just didn't happen. It could have, maybe even should have, but it didn't, the hockey gods deemed otherwise.
In the end, Alberta hoisted the cup, but we were still winners. WHAT A DREAM TEAM we had this year, Coach Mac! You and the guys deserve kudos - all season the plays were there, the perfect passes, the outstanding offense, the dazzling defense, the glorious goals making us AUS champs! The team to beat in the country! They were beautiful to watch. Hold your heads high gentlemen. We're disappointed for you, not in you! Your fans adored you and can't wait until next season. GO REDS!
