When people turn out to support a good cause, or for that matter any cause in which they truly believe, I am always impressed. Today was no different. I've been a paid-up, but not-active member of the Fredericton SPCA for about 23 years, and decided to change that by joining the Board of Directors back in December 2006. Today we held our biggest fund-raiser of the year, "Bark in the Park" during which people bring their dogs to take part in the activities although it isn't a prerequisite for participation. We raised about $20,000 with pledge sheets people collected, along with the other activities during the afternoon. One woman collected $4,000 on her own. Now that's commitment.
My job was to assist Clifford the Big Red Dog. He visited thanks to the CBC, and for a donation, you could have your, your pet's or both photo taken for a donation. My friend and neighbour offered to be Clifford for the day (he's done it once before), and despite having children maul you, not to mention the potential for other canine to mark their territory on you, he held up admirably. I want to thank him publicly for being such a good sport. People like him make me proud to call them friend. And also a big thanks to my future son-in-law who almost donned the suit instead.
It's great when a community turns out like Fredericton usually does to support those trying to make a difference. I'm glad I was born, grew up and raised my kids here - and that my granddaughter is enjoying the same kind of generous upbringing.
Volunteering is such a great way to meet people, see what goes on in your neighbourhood and really feel good about making a difference. I highly recommend it. And for those who just don't feel they can spare the time with work and family commitments - give however you can.
And I want to make one last plug - for obviously - one of my favourite charities of choice - visit us at http://www.frederictonspca.ca/. The animals appreciate it! Thanks for being there Fredericton!

The SPCA and the IWK are my two main places to donate to. I always said that if I ever win the lottery, thats where alot of my money will go...hehe. I agree, the bark in the park is a great chance to get out and meet with other dog owners and a great way to raise money. I have taken part in it several different years.
